Legend: On to interview number two for the month! For any newcomers, welcome to the Teashop Between Worlds, we're delighted to have you here. Order a drink at the till, be aware that you might be forcibly vanished if it's coffee, and take a seat.

Hello Shae, thank you for joining me here and thanks to your author, Frankie Sutton, for introducing us to what sounds like a thrilling story of darkness and discovery.

First of all, please introduce yourself. Name, pronouns if you wish, and tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

Shae: My name is Shae Taizer. As of now, I’m the youngest of the Deviants to have been permitted to visit the Battle Realm.

Legend: I take it that's a good thing? Sounds dangerous. Can you tell us a bit about the world you live in?

Shae: I am originally from the Royale Hawse, within the Royale Realm. The only way to access my realm is through a portal. But I have lived in Los Angeles as a child. For my safety, I am restricted to the Royale Realm.  My realm does take a lot of inspiration from Japanese architecture.

Legend: We have several teashop entrances in Japan. It sounds like a pretty place. Let’s a have a quick-fire round of This or That. Try to just answer and not think too hard about it.

  • Tea or coffee? It depends on the moment. Mostly coffee.

  • Sweet or savoury? Sweet.

  • Music or sports? Sports.

  • Paperback or ebook? Paperback.

  • Paint or pencil? Pencil.

  • Countryside or city? Countryside. The city is dangerous for me.

  • Fight or negotiate? Fight.

  • Sword or gun? Sword. Always a sword.

  • Vampire or werewolf? What’s a werewolf? I’ve only seen vampires in my world.

  • FIlm or TV series? TV series.

  • Morals or laws? Laws. Without them there is chaos.

  • Kids or puppies? Puppies, I guess.

  • Museum or beach? Museum.

  • World peace or end famine? I don’t have time to think about such things.

  • Winter or summer? Winter.

  • Dance or football? Football, since I enjoy sports.

  • Olives or sardines? Never had these.

  • Rainbows or monochrome? Monochrome.

  • Brain or gut? Need brains to survive my world.

  • Traditional or new? Traditional.

  • Revenge or justice? Justice…and revenge. (Legend: I call cheating!)

  • Fast zombies or slow zombies? Zombies? I suppose Vampires can be considered zombies. And they are fast. I prefer a dead one.

  • Mountains or oceans? Mountains, more places to hide when in danger.

  • Afterlife or ghost? I don’t understand this question.

  • Friendship or the law? Law.

  • Fantasy or reality? Reality.

Legend: Have you ever broken a law?

Shae: Returning to Los Angeles as an adult, I have no doubt broken a lot of their laws.

Legend: If you could go back and do one thing differently, what would it be?

Shae: There’s a specific cave in Battle Realm I shouldn’t have entered.

Legend: Oooh, tease! What’s on your birthday wishlist?

Shae: I spent a large chunk of my life not celebrating my birthday.

Legend: Must be a pretty big list by now then. How do you feel about magic? If you use magic, tell us a bit about it.

Shae: I mainly use my magic to create portals for travel.

Legend: I know a cat like that! Tell us about your relationship with your siblings.

Shae: I am an only child. Even my ex-adoptive parents only had me.

Legend: Have you ever had an imaginary friend or foe?

Shae: I have enough with Gerard to deal with. His mind attacks sap all my attention.

Legend: That sounds rough. What’s your ideal holiday?

Shae: Halloween.

Legend: Good pick! Tell us about the antagonist in your life.

Shae: Gerard Jacquain. His obsession with me is very unsettling. And painful.

Legend: Anyone with an obsession is dangerous. What are the rules of magic in your world?

Shae: We (Deviants, humans that use magic) have a ranking system for those of us who obtain the DeviMagi status. The closer to Rank 1, is an indication of being next in line when the Master DeviMagi retires. And as far as I know, Deviants are the only ones able to create a portal without the use of a machine—like our allies use. We hone our magic and fighting skills in Battle Realm, in classrooms, or in practice matches on the grounds of the Royale Hawse.

Legend: Fascinating. I love how different magics work. Thanks very much for joining us here today, Shae. Wish you the best with all those dangerous things! Brrrr.
