Not for the faint of heart but these tormented waters are well worth braving.
As ever, Rae's prose is gorgeous and emotive, drowning the reader in the anguish of the narrator and the beautiful darkness of their world. We are shown flawed women, simultaneously powerful and powerless, each with their own distinct character and story to tell. The story explores female relationships with each other and with the men who are unfortunate enough to get caught in their lives. It is sympathetic without hiding the horror and I was left with very mixed feelings about the cast and their predicaments. Certainly a story to dwell in the brain long after the final word is read.
